Spotify Raises Prices While Audible Tempts Listeners with a £0.99 Offer

Spotify has announced another price increase. From November, the Premium Individual plan will go up from £11.99 to £12.99 per month. According to Spotify, this rise will help the company “develop new features and continue to bring users the best experience.” However, the only real advantage of Premium over the Standard plan is access to audiobooks — and that’s exactly where Audible is now undercutting Spotify.

Spotify Premium: More Expensive for the Same Features

The price increase means Spotify Premium users will pay more for the same benefits — ad-free music, offline downloads, and limited audiobook listening.
Subscribers can access around 15 hours of audiobooks per month, but anyone who listens regularly knows that’s barely enough for one long book.

For people mainly interested in audiobooks, the new £12.99 price doesn’t offer much extra value.

Audible Launches £0.99 Offer for New Subscribers

At the same time, Audible is running a special offer until 16 December: £0.99 per month for the first three months, then £8.99 per month afterwards.

Outside the offer, Audible currently offers two main subscription options in the UK:

• Audible Plus – £5.99/month, with unlimited access to thousands of titles from the Plus Catalogue, including Audible Originals and podcasts.

• Audible Premium Plus – £8.99/month, which includes everything from the Plus plan plus one credit per month. Each credit lets you pick any audiobook in the store, no matter the price, and you keep it forever, even after cancelling.

Audible’s library is far larger than Spotify’s, with over 800,000 audiobooks and podcasts, and there’s no listening cap. You can listen for as many hours as you want, on any device, online or offline.

The Bottom Line

If you’re mainly into audiobooks, go for Audible — no question about it. It’s cheaper, unlimited, and gives you titles you can keep.

But if you also listen to a lot of music, you could save by switching to the Standard Spotify plan and grabbing Audible’s £0.99 offer for three months. You’d save about £1 a month — which might not sound like much, but hey, that’s one book at the charity shop… or one Kindle book.
